Losing sight can happen to anyone, at any time
Every hour, someone in the UK loses their sight. Around 2 million people are already living with sight loss, and that number could double by 2050. As this grows, it’s more important than ever that we reach out to people in our communities who could benefit from what libraries offer. Libraries can be a real lifeline — a place for accessible resources, friendly faces, and everyday support for anyone experiencing sight loss.
Finding ways to keep reading
Reading looks different for everyone — and that’s something we celebrate. For people with a vision impairment or print disability, formats like audiobooks, large print, Braille, and accessible eBooks aren’t just helpful, they’re essential. We’re proud to offer a wide range of options, so everyone can enjoy stories and information in the way that works best for them.
More than books: staying connected
But libraries offer more than reading. We create spaces where people can meet, share, and take part. From relaxed, accessible reading groups to hands-on tactile activities, there are lots of ways to stay connected and involved. It’s all about making sure everyone feels welcome and able to join in.
By bringing together accessible formats and inclusive activities, we’re working to help everyone in our community find something they enjoy — and people to share it with.
The National Year of Reading
In the National Year of Reading, everyone is encouraged to #GoAllIn, whatever their preferred reading format.
If you or someone you know could benefit, we’d love to help — just get in touch or pop into your local library to find out more.
