Description:
Alexis Keir, the author of ‘Windward Family’, will be talking about the people whose lives he has explored in his book, Windward Family, and how he came to find out more about them. Reading excerpts from the book, Alexis will describe the process of writing and researching it and take audience questions.
Windward Family explores the lives of people who over generations have travelled from the island of Saint Vincent to England. From the Caribbean to Great Britain, and from the 19th century to the present, Windward Family takes us inside the beating heart of a Black British family, showing us how we become who we are, and how the search for ourselves always leads us to the same place – home.
Alexis’ parents came from Saint Vincent to the UK in 1960 and raised their family in Luton, but Alexis, his sister and his brother lived in Saint Vincent for a period as children. The book has been described as ‘a beautiful ode to migration, love, and all that we do for family.’ and as 'A powerful meditation on what it means to belong.'
Alexis Keir works for the NHS and now lives in London but grew up in Luton.
